Explanations Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is an essential nutrient in a healthy diet. Many citrus fruits contain large amounts of vitamin C. You can test for vitamin C using a chemical called indophenol. Indophenol is an indicator of how much vitamin C is in a sample.
